In August of 2007 I was contacted by Ron Denn to see if I would like to set up a buck skinners rendezvous for the Wright County Fair to be held at Howard Lake MN on July 23-27, 2008. Being in 2008 Minnesota turns 150 years old, I thought about it seriously. A few months later I was contacted again & my decision was to go ahead. After several meetings with some members of the fair board everything was cut & dried. Then the organizing began. There was the location on the fair ground to be chosen, & all the frills to be worked out. I must say & give a great deal of credit to the fair board for working extremely well with us in the planning, us meaning my wife. Marcie helped out a great deal.
Most all were set up the day before the fair started. Once we started rolling the Fair Board members were still most willing to help us in what ever we needed. Thanks again Ron Denn.
The flat landers started to trickle in on Wednesday. As each day started the number of flat landers increased tremendously. The sweets from Nobody's candy store were a real treat to all, and then yummy fry bread from Marie & her mother. Lynn was in full swing with his furniture. The flat landers were impressed with Mad Jacks array of trade goods, Morey worked his arm off at the forge, what a dedicated blacksmith. Cisco displayed the knives he made that were for sale and also spent considerable time demonstrating flint and steel fire starting. Chicken Legs & Buffalo Walker did a fantastic job teaching the flat landers how to throw a hawk & shoot primitive bow and arrow. A few of us had a little bow and arrow competition amongst ourselves. Shamus sure had his hands full explaining the fur trade era to the flatlanders. 3 feathers had a nice assortment of the things he has made. I think talks a lot helps him out a lot. She sure does brighten ones day, even though she is only 7 years old.
I have to give a big thanks to the members of the 14 camps that participated in making this historical event a great success. Also we must thank the Sheriff department for the above excellence of patrolling the area.

With only a month before the "Big Show", we have all been very busy, trying to get it together. In a week, Clear Coffee's family and friends will be doing the much anticipated Write Co. Rendezvous, being held at the fair. They are going to have a lot of demontstrating and even more fun.
We will let you all know how it goes.
Then, we are off to the races, planning a big Frolic, sure to be a good time. There are new things in store, including the Friday night social, being put together by Marcie and LuAnn and back after so many years, the voyager games.
Get Ready! We hope to see you there!

The Mike Fink event will soon be upon us again. I was thinking back some years when we had a lot more participents for this event. We would have shooting events for the better part of Sat. Then after supper we would hold an auction. Sunday morning we would start out with shot gun competition. Then the finale event of the day. The notorious Mike Fink shoot. Of course there was a lot of harrisment during this event. The good guy award was passed on for another year, and then for the worst shot or the most face shots would get the bad guy award. The shooter would carry that award for a year but had to mke one of his own & bring it to the Mike Fink shoot the following year. Oh what fun we had.
I think I just may have the clubs secretary add two motiones to be included in the work day meeting letter agenda for April.
Every one have a balmy day, 40 degrees today, wow.

February 8-9, 2008 the South Fork Renegades of Hutchinson Mn held there Snow Ball Encampment. For the most part all I can say about it is BRRRRRRR. There was 9 camps braveing the cold. Some were there as early as Wednsday & the rest trickled in from Thursday to Friday. Saturday morning Hermy and I set up the shooting range. It's a good thing the wind was out of the North West. We didn't have much of a breeze on the shooting range. Five events were run in the morning and that was the end of it. The wind had picked up to 45 mile an hour gusts & by early afternoon it was a -15 degrees without the wind chill.
Camp is set up in a horse shoe clearing so unless the wind comes out of the South you are pretty much protected. wakeing up Sunday morning was again brrrrrr cold. Everyone survived the cold & wind ok, knowing that buckskinners are a hardy bunch. Cheers for Darla braving the extremities.

2007 Frolic The
2007 Frolic went off without a hitch, well except for the fact that it
rained alot. We did not do much shooting and fit the other events in
where we could. But we were in good company, so it was a lot of fun.
We did a number on the wood shed though, I think it is about empty. Thursday, July 26, 2007

December Meeting
On
December 8th, we will be meeting as a club at the Pizza Ranch in
Glencoe, MN. We will be talking about how rainy the Frolic was and how
that all went. We will also be celebrating our Christmas meeting
there. We will be planning dates for our Spring clean up day and
enducting new members into the club. Although this is a good way for
all of us to get buisness done, we look forward to it so we can all get
to see each other again.

How Rain is so Relaxing
This year, the Olde Tyme Frolic was interesting. Although it did not officially start until Friday, we will start by talking about Wednesday. I, Gabi, the Booshway, got there bright and early Wednesday morning. I was exited to greet each family as they came, but to my surprise, we already had about ten camps up. I met with each of them briefly before going and setting up my camp. Once that was done, I enjoyed a nice, relaxing day getting people into place, and may I say, by Wednesday evening there must have been about fifteen to twenty camps. I feel that every year, people come earlier and earlier. Since space is limited, we have all learned hat getting there early is really important. I figured that Thursday would be similar, just a few people coming in. Well I was wrong! I took a blanket and sat by the entrance because there were so many people coming in that I could not sit at my camp and see all of them. By Thursday night, I could count our left over campsites on one hand and they were really small. I was worried that if we had more the next day, we would have to turn people away, which I did not want to do. Friday was wonderful. The weather was amazing. For the most part, those who came in to camp, I already knew were coming. It worked out really well. We did the men's golf game that evening as usual, but they had to dress in their men's finest. I had a lot of complaints and plan to go back to the way it was before, where they dress in women's finest. We did the candle shoot and had a great night in camp. Now, there is no other more beautiful time that after the sun goes down and everyone lights their lamps and the socializing begins. There is one camp where the musicians meet and play and sing and it is so great. Everyone is welcome to come and join in. I really believe the greatest thing about our camp is that whether someone has went there since its inception or it is there first time there, we are all family. Caring and sharing with each other. It was really gearing up to be a spectacular weekend in Forest City. Waking up to Saturday morning this year also meant waking up to rain. Although I realize cellular phones are not period correct, I pulled mine out to see my live radar. It looked like the rain was moving south. I told everyone we would be in the clear by noon, no later. Well the storm shifted to heading straight west and it rained till nine that night. We did the Round Robin, which was so fun. I brought a leather dress to trade, although I figured that I would not trade it. After a couple rounds, I decided to lay it down. There were two sisters (about eight and ten) trading on the blanket and the dress was perfect for their size. They put down everything they had to trade. Someone else put down a full bone and bead breast plate and Laurie put down a Swiss Blanket Capote, which looked like it would be big enough for my husband (He is no little person). I was a little confused because the dress was for a big child or young woman. Laurie would not really fit into it and besides, she makes her own leather dresses. But I thought, okay, there must be a reason for this and it just felt right, so I traded with her. She than stood up, walked over to the sisters and told them to stand up. She asked if they were sisters, the y said they were and she sized the dress up to them. She handed it to one of them and said, "share it." I was speechless. That was the coolest thing I have ever seen anyone ever do. The rest of the evening went on under that awning and we traded for hours. Sunday it rained all day. We had no shooting events and minimal other events. There was not a whole lot of public, which was bad for the Fort. Even though nothing got done that weekend, we all had a lot of fun, going from one camp to another and just socializing. We all tore down in the rain and headed home. We are hoping that next year, we will be able to do the events we planned this year and maybe it will not rain quite so much, but if it does, we can remember how relaxing the rain made this rendezvous. |
